Open access (OA) enables the widest possible dissemination and impact of your work. We provide and favour OA options that remove author charges where possible, to support publication of your work and compliance with funder mandates.

Read & Publish

Corresponding authors based at institutions that have signed a Read & Publish (R&P) agreement will be published OA by default under a CC BY licence at no extra charge to the institution or author. Agreements currently cover our entire portfolio, including five subscription and two fully OA journals (Bioscience Reports and Neuronal Signaling), and all article types in research as well as review journals are eligible.

Gold open access via an article publishing charge

All of our subscription journals offer authors the choice to pay an article publishing charge (APC) to make their final published article OA.

In our two fully OA journals, if there is no R&P agreement in place, authors will be charged an APC.

Members of the Biochemical Society receive discounted APCs alongside a range of other exclusive benefits. Find out more about tailored membership categories

To support greater equity in the global research community, we are working to reduce barriers to publishing in our journals. We are partnered with Research4Life, and offer free or discounted Gold OA publication to authors from institutions in lower income countries.

In addition to these initiatives, we encourage authors to contact our Editorial team with the title and abstract of their paper, along with a letter from their institution confirming their funding status, to discuss any individual circumstances enabling publication with us.

Green open access

An Author’s Accepted Manuscript may be deposited in institutional or subject-specific repositories without embargo. Immediate Green deposition is supported as a way for authors to achieve funder and institutional compliance across all our journals.

When archiving your Author Accepted Manuscript, please make clear that it is not the final Version of Record,  and make sure to include a link to the Version of Record along with attribution to the author and journal.

Funder compliance

The Gold OA options for the final article and the embargo-free Green OA archiving of the accepted manuscript facilitate compliant routes to publication for funders.

As a final check that your funder recognises these routes, you can either use the Journal Checker Tool or contact our Editorial team for any specific queries.

More detail on all the above can be found in our full OA policy.

The Biochemical Society is committed to transitioning its whole portfolio to full OA by 2025. Find out more about our future publishing plans over on our Transition to Open hub.
