Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are subpopulation of cells within the tumour bulk, which leads to tumour recurrence and therapeutic resistance. This special issue includes a varied collection of review articles with comprehensive discussion on the complexity of CSC heterogeneity, signalling pathways regulating the behaviours of CSCs, the therapeutic resistance mechanism of CSCs, and therapeutic targets against CSCs. The cover image shows a schematic of a locally advanced prostate cancer gland with a decrease in basal cells and expansion of luminal progenitor-like cells. For further information see the review by Liu and colleagues (pages 291–303). Cover image courtesy of Dean G Tang.
