The cover of this issue of Clinical Science (volume 136, issue 15) features an image from the study by Whitehead and Fried et al. (pp. 973-987). These cardiopulmonary effects of nicotine are mediated by the alpha7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (alpha7-nAChR).
