Chronic palmitic acid exposure leads to lipid accumulation and lipotoxicity in pancreatic β cell line, INS-1E cells. In the latest issue of Clinical Science (volume 133, issue 19), Xie et al. found that these detrimental effects are counteracted by administration with Fibroblast growth factor 21. The cover features a mosaic of Oil red O staining of INS-1E cells after treatment with palmitic acid for 48 hours (Red: accumulation of lipid droplets; Blue: nuclei).
